Common Dilemma of IELTS Exam takers

When taking an English proficiency examination, every candidate is expected to be prepared and to do well in the exam. This is the exact reason why IELTS test takers find IELTS training that will improve their English skills. Despite the fact that intensive training is practiced in these IELTS review centers, there are still some test candidates who unfortunately miss reaching their target scores. Their performance during the examination can greatly affect their IELTS scores. There are a number of dilemmas IELTS test takers have that can contribute to poor performance.

  1. Unfamiliarity with question types – As a test candidate, it is one’s responsibility to know what the test is all about. This includes the format, the scoring, and even the question types. Some candidates are lucky enough to have been taught in IELTS training centers on the different question types in the exam. Those who preferred to study by themselves usually have a hard time trying to figure out how to find the answers to these tasks. As a result, they get poor scores in the examination. This shows how important it is to undergo IELTS training in IELTS review centers for a comprehensive understanding of the examination. 

  2. Vocabulary problems – Comprehension becomes a problem when words or phrases are difficult to understand. For example, in American English, most candidates are familiar with the use of the word “elevator”. However, in British English, it is commonly referred as “lift”. If you are someone with very limited vocabulary, there could be a huge misunderstanding when faced with this kind of words. The best thing to do is to be familiar with vocabulary words in both American and British English. The use of vocabulary is also important in the speaking and writing sub-tests. A candidate has to use appropriate words that suit with the response’s content. Most candidates who fail to get a good score in both sub-tests show limited vocabulary in expressing their ideas. Further, words are often repeated that cause a hindrance in having a good and smart response. 

  3. Poor time management – Like any other English proficiency examination, IELTS test candidates have to practice time management in answering the exam, particularly the reading test. Some candidates take so much time thinking of the right answer in a particular test number. It is much better to mark this number and move on to the next one. Review your answers once you finish answering specifically those that have been marked. Taking too much time in a question consumes time that should have been used with the other items in the exam. 

  4. Grammar and sentence construction – Not only good in content but also grammatically correct is considered to be a good response. There are candidates who overlook this point. Some sentences are just too long that it could be summarized that will even sound better. Also, there are answers that are very inconsistent with the use of verb tenses. Both grammar and sentence construction play an important role in contributing to the overall content of a response.
