Tips for a Successful Presentation

According to Corrie Miller’s blog post titled “80% of Presentations Fail- Do yours?” Phillip Khan-Panni, speaker and author, said that 80 percent of presentations fail because of inability to deliver objectives. The speaking class in the IELTS review center in Davao is one way to develop good presentation skills.

Whether at work or in school, you are required to engage in and conduct presentations. For instance, if you plan to pursue your graduate study after training in the IELTS review center, class reports are inevitable. Listed below are some useful tips for enhancing your presentation skills.

1.    Dress appropriately. Even during your classes in the IELTS review center in Davao, you need to dress for the occasion all the time. One of the considerations in an effective presentation is to dress smart. Men and women alike should avoid revealing and grimy clothes.  Also, as much as possible, always wear closed shoes.  Avoid distracting colors and prints.

Another key is to think tall and walk your clothes. Do not risk comfort for style as focusing too much on fashion might hinder your presentation.

2.    Own your topic. Conduct thorough researches and be sure that you know every detail about your presentation. According to Tidewater Community College, you must treat your topic as a question to investigate. This way, you will pose various issues that are useful for your presentation.

Be sure to acquire information from credible and multiple sources. You can consult offline and online databases, journals, published articles, among others. This method will expose you to the different realms of your topic. 

3.    Know and engage with your audience. Boring presentations can put your listeners to sleep. Thus, defeating the purpose of your discourse - which is to share information and ignite interests. This is evident in 32 percent of individuals who admitted that they have already fallen asleep while listening to presentations.

Keep a lively tone of voice. Also, change your intonations to emphasize ideas. It also pays to put humor on your speech. However, be wary of including too much comicality as it may steer distraction and cause the class to veer from the main objective of the talk. Another key is to engage your audience by asking questions and soliciting opinion or feedback. This way, it becomes a two-way communication process where you interact and learn from one another.

4.    Create a logical flow. Create an outline and establish your framework at the beginning of your presentation. This will give your audience an overview of the scope of your topic. Furthermore, this is another way to allow them to formulate questions in advance.

5.    Be authentic. Rather than promoting viewpoint, use your presentations to explain complex situations. Avoid discussing abstract concepts. Let your presentation tell a story by providing concrete examples and widening their perspective. Present different resources from which you have acquired the information. This practice will not only increase your authenticity as a speaker but also uphold your credibility.

6.    Indulge in creativity. Maximize the internet and technology when conducting a presentation. Visual aids are useful tools in highlighting significant information. You can use power point presentations, videos, audio-visual materials, and other instruments. However, make sure that your medium is only for support. Do not rely purely on your materials as the major discussion should depend highly on you.

7.    Create authority. Be sure that you look presentable and credible. Moreover, though speaking in front of other people can be intimidating; don’t let the crowd overwhelm you. Stand tall, chin up, and speak in an audible voice. Show them that you are knowledgeable by giving them facts and figures, not just your point of view.
Statistics show that 74 percent of people are afraid of public speaking. Conquer your fear and improve your presentation skills with the above mentioned tips.
